Sudan Virus Outbreak in Uganda: What You Need to Know
As of February 20, 2025, Uganda has reported nine confirmed cases of Sudan virus disease (SVD), including one death, since the outbreak was declared on January 30. SVD, a severe illness related to Ebola, has a high fatality rate, and no approved vaccines or treatments exist. Marburg Virus Disease Outbreak in Tanzania: Latest Update
As of February 25, 2025, Tanzania’s Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak in Kagera has resulted in 10 cases (two confirmed, eight probable), all fatal. The last confirmed death was reported on February 10. The Ministry of Health, with WHO support, deployed a rapid response team, enhanced surveillance, and continues laboratory testing. MVD, similar to Ebola, spreads via bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include fever, headache, and potential haemorrhagic manifestations. No approved treatments or vaccines exist. Measles Outbreak Spreads Across the U.S., 2nd Death in a Decade Reported
The measles outbreak, which began in Texas and quickly spread to other U.S. states, has resulted in over 160 confirmed cases, with 95% of those affected being unvaccinated, according to the CDC. The first fatality, a school-age child in Texas, marks the first measles death in the U.S. in a decade. A second death has been reported in New Mexico, where an unvaccinated adult, who did not seek medical care before passing away, later tested positive for the virus. Read More >>
Autochthonous Chikungunya Virus Disease – La Réunion, France (2024–2025)
As of February 16, 2025, La Réunion has reported 1,069 autochthonous chikungunya cases, with 927 in 2025. The outbreak continues to spread, with 362 new cases in week 6 across 21 municipalities. Le Tampon (228 cases) and L'Étang-Salé (169 cases) report the highest numbers. The epidemic is considered low-intensity, with limited hospitalizations. Local authorities activated Level 3 of the ORSEC 'Arboviruses' system and reinforced vector control, public awareness, and insecticide measures. The ECDC is monitoring the situation, and travelers are advised to take mosquito bite precautions as Aedes albopictus remains active in La Réunion’s austral summer. Read More >>
