Sharp Rise in Zika Cases Raises Public Health Concerns in India
A WHO report states that Maharashtra recorded 140 Zika virus cases in 2024, the highest since 2021. Zika virus has been present in the state for years, with cases reported annually. However, the sharp increase in infections in 2024 has raised serious public health concerns. The state has seen a steady rise in cases, with just one case in 2021, three in 2022, 18 in 2023, and a sharp increase in 2024. Karnataka reported 10 cases, and Gujarat one case in 2024.
Zika virus (ZIKV) spreads primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes but can also be transmitted from mother to fetus, through sexual contact, blood transfusion, and possibly organ transplantation. Currently, no specific treatment is available for Zika virus infection.
The 2015-2016 outbreak led to global health warnings, prompting efforts to control mosquito populations and raise awareness, particularly for pregnant women. The recent surge in Maharashtra highlights an ongoing public health concern. Read more >>
Foot and Mouth Disease Detected in Germany After 35 Years
Germany reported an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) on 10 January 2025, marking the first case in the country since 1988 and the first in the EU since 2011. The outbreak, detected in water buffalo in Märkisch-Oderland, Brandenburg, involves serotype O, though the exact source remains unknown.
Authorities have implemented strict control measures, including movement restrictions, culling within a 1km radius, and enhanced surveillance. Neighbouring countries, including the Netherlands, have restricted animal movements, while South Korea has imposed an import ban on German pork. Investigations continue to assess the spread, including potential transmission to wildlife. Read more >>
FMD outbreaks can severely impact livestock health, trade, and economic stability. Please enquire about the custom protein development for your next ELISA test here.
Surge in Norovirus Cases Puts Pressure on Hospitals
Hospitals across England are facing a significant surge in norovirus cases, exacerbating winter pressures on the NHS. Data from last week shows an average of 784 hospitalised patients per day, an 80% increase compared to the same period last year. This marks the highest levels of norovirus infections since January 2020.
Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, spreads easily through contaminated surfaces, food, and close contact, making it particularly challenging for hospitals. Entire wards often need to be closed for deep cleaning, further straining healthcare resources. Although most people recover within a few days, young children and vulnerable individuals are at higher risk of complications.Read more >>
Effective diagnostics play a crucial role in containing outbreaks and guiding public health responses. TNAC’s norovirus VLPs allow for development of highly sensitive diagnostic tools, helping rapidly detect infections, improve outbreak management, and protect healthcare systems from further strain.
