Nipah Virus Strikes Kerala Again

Kerala has reported four confirmed Nipah virus cases, including two deaths, from Malappuram and Palakkad districts, the first outbreak in Palakkad. Transmitted by bats through contaminated food or close contact, the virus is highly fatal. Authorities are intensifying contact tracing, hospital alerts, and public awareness. With no vaccine or treatment, prevention and early supportive care are critical. WHO considers the international risk low but urges vigilance. Read more >>

Chikungunya Outbreak Continues in Guangdong, China

Between 10–16 August 2025, Guangdong province reported 830 new chikungunya virus (CHIKV) cases, mostly from Foshan (644), with smaller numbers in Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Shenzhen, and other cities. Since the outbreak began in July, a total of 9,933 cases have been reported, with a declining trend in Foshan. Two cases were also reported in Macao.

Authorities are focusing on mosquito control, including cleaning stagnant water, insecticide spraying, drone-driven disinsections, and public awareness campaigns. Read more >>

Ivermectin Reduces Malaria by 26% in Kenya

The BOHEMIA trial in Kenya showed that mass administration of ivermectin reduced malaria infections by 26% in children aged 5–15, complementing bed net use. Ivermectin kills mosquitoes feeding on treated individuals, offering a novel approach where insecticide resistance is rising. The trial involved over 20,000 participants and confirmed the drug’s safety, also reducing scabies, head lice, and bed bugs. Read more >>
