 Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak Update

The 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola virus (BDBV) outbreak has resulted in 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths across six provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as of 27 August 2026. Encouragingly, Uganda has successfully contained its outbreak, with no new cases reported since 21 June and WHO officially declaring the outbreak over on 25 August after 42 consecutive days without a confirmed case. While the risk to the EU/EEA remains very low, the outbreak highlights the ongoing need for outbreak preparedness and research tools. Communicable disease threats report, 22 - 28 August, week 35

In support of these efforts, TNAC's new BDBV GP1 protein, based on the 2026 outbreak sequence, is now live and available to researchers worldwide. Bundibugyo Ebola Virus (BDBV) glycoprotein 1 (GP1)

West Nile Virus Activity Continues Across Europe: Fatality Reported in the Netherlands

West Nile virus (WNV) activity continues to expand across Europe, with 124 affected areas identified across 14 countries as of 26 August 2026. Italy, Greece, Romania and France account for the highest number of affected regions, while seasonal conditions remain favourable for mosquito-borne transmission, and additional human cases are expected in the coming weeks. The growing impact of WNV was highlighted this month by the reported death of a person infected with the virus in the Netherlands, marking a significant public health concern as the transmission season continues. Communicable disease threats report, 22 - 28 August, week 35, Person died from a West Nile virus infection acquired in the Netherlands | RIVM.

In support of WNV research and diagnostic development, TNAC offers a comprehensive West Nile virus protein portfolio to help scientists monitor, study and respond to this important emerging infectious disease.

Airport Malaria Claims Two Lives in Germany

A rare outbreak of airport-acquired malaria at Frankfurt Airport has resulted in six confirmed infections and the deaths of two airport workers. German health authorities believe infected mosquitoes were transported on an international flight before transmitting the disease locally, highlighting the continuing risks posed by global travel and vector-borne pathogens. While malaria is not transmitted from person to person and remains uncommon in Europe, delayed diagnosis can increase the risk of severe disease. In response to growing interest in malaria surveillance, diagnostics and vaccine research, TNAC has recently expanded its portfolio with new malaria proteins, supporting researchers working to better understand and combat this globally significant infectious disease.
