Yellow Fever Resurges Across the Americas and Africa

Yellow fever is making an alarming comeback, with WHO reporting nearly 100 confirmed cases across Africa and South America in the first five months of 2026 alone, following an eightfold surge in cases last year. The virus is expanding into previously unaffected areas, increasing concerns over wider spread and urban outbreaks. As symptoms often mimic dengue, malaria and other febrile illnesses, rapid and accurate diagnostics are becoming increasingly critical. Enhanced molecular and serological testing will play a pivotal role in early detection, outbreak monitoring and public health response, supporting vaccination programmes and helping to contain future epidemics before they escalate. Travel-Associated Dengue and Chikungunya Cases Continue to Rise in Europe

EU/EEA countries have reported an increase in travel-associated dengue and chikungunya cases linked to popular tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean. Since 2025, over 107 dengue cases have been reported in travellers returning from the Maldives, while more than 166 chikungunya cases have been linked to travel to the Seychelles. Although recent data suggest a decline in imported cases, ECDC warns that favourable mosquito activity across parts of Europe could result in local transmission following introduction by infected travellers. These events highlight the ongoing need for robust surveillance and accurate diagnostic tools to support the detection and differentiation of arboviral infections. Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak Escalates, Driving Demand for Advanced Diagnostics

The ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 900 confirmed cases and 230 deaths, making it one of the most significant infectious disease events of 2026. While transmission remains concentrated in eastern DRC, imported cases and secondary infections have also been reported in Uganda. With no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently available for Bundibugyo virus disease, rapid diagnosis remains central to outbreak control. The outbreak highlights the critical need for reliable molecular and serological assays to support case identification, surveillance, contact tracing and future vaccine development efforts.
